Everything you needed to know about the Migrant (M) visas!

In Colombia there are 3 categories of Colombian visas, Visas (v) Visitors, (M) Migrants and (R) Resident. In this section we will talk about the visas (M) Migrants, which are addressed to those foreigners who wish to establish their domicile in Colombia but who do not meet the conditions to be residents.

For starters, these visas can be approved for a period of 2 to 3 years. The time for which it is granted will depend on the visa officer in charge of the application.

The holder can apply for a beneficiary visa for their parents, spouse or children under the age of 25.This visa as a beneficiary of a Migrant visa allows students to study.

However, there are several subcategories of Migrant visas, including:

  • Have a permanent Colombian spouse or partner(a).

  • Be a national of one of the States members of the Mercosur Agreement (Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Paraguay and Uruguay).

  • Have a job offer.

  • Own a business.

  • Pursue primary, secondary or university studies.

It is important to keep in mind that after your visa is approved, you will not be able to leave Colombia for a period equal to or longer than 6 months on a continuous basis, because if you do, the visa will lose its validity.

Finally, as mentioned at the beginning, the Migrant visa has a future objective and it is the one that you can set your address in Colombia indefinitely, so, with this visa you can accumulate time to apply for a visa as a resident (R), the set time is 2 or 5 years depending on the type of visa of which you are holder.
